BRSC Statement: Don't Drink and Drive

Stick to the Wicket! Don't Drink and Drive! Bermuda Road Safety Council Statement for August 2023.

August 14, 2023

In the wake of a recent road traffic fatalities, the Bermuda Road Safety Council (BRSC) extends its deepest condolences to the bereaved family and friends. Our hearts go out to you during this challenging period.

The BRSC's campaign theme for August: "Don't Drink and Drive". This crucial message serves as a reminder that the responsibility of road safety rests with each of us. As summer festivities surge into full swing, including concerts, parties, and cricket matches, alcohol consumption escalates. While individuals have the liberty to enjoy a drink, we emphasise the importance of acting responsibly.

According to the Bermuda Police Service's recent Operation Vega statistics, spanning from January 1st to August 7th, 2023, a total of 162 motorists were apprehended for impaired driving.

By contrast, during the same period in 2022, 145 motorists were arrested for impaired driving. There is absolutely no justification for getting behind the wheel while under the influence. For those intending to indulge in alcohol, a comprehensive plan for a safe journey home must be in place.

Numerous alternatives are available for securing a safe ride home. Individuals can use taxis, minibuses, and Hitch ride services or designate a sober driver for group outings. These alternatives underscore responsible decision-making that ultimately contributes to the safety of our roads.

Driving while under the influence of alcohol is against the Road Traffic Act 1947. Under section 35 it speaks to driving when under the influence of alcohol or drugs and driving when alcohol concentration is over the prescribed limit, among other points in that section.

Driving while impaired doesn't only include alcohol but any substance that alters your mind and impairs your ability to function correctly.

The BRSC takes a strong stand against driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs and asks that members of the public act responsibly when they drink.

We continue to remind the motoring public to drive with care and caution, don't drink and drive, and slow down. Please do your part in keeping our roads safe, free from reckless driving, excessive speed, distracted driving and impaired drivers. Come on, Bermuda, Let's Stick to the Wicket and make sure we arrive alive.

Cautious Drivers = Safer Roads = Safer Bermuda
